Grand Ledge Athletics Hall of Fame Back to School 5K Fundraiser - Saturday, August 29th at 8:45 AM.
A 1997 graduate of Grand Ledge High School, Vicky Sackett (McWilliams) stands among the most accomplished distance and middle-distance runners in Comet history, excelling in both cross country and track.
In cross country, Sackett was a three-year varsity letterwinner, earning All-Conference honors in 1995 and 1996 and qualifying for the MHSAA State Meet both years. She was a top-10 finisher at the Greater Lansing Invitational in 1995 and 1996 and was named team MVP in 1996, the same year she led Grand Ledge to a conference championship.
On the track, Sackett’s impact was even more remarkable. A four-year varsity letterwinner, she amassed 360.25 career points to join Grand Ledge’s prestigious Century Club. She captured multiple conference and regional titles, including a Greater Lansing Honor Roll Meet championship in the 400 meters (1995), 800 meters (1996 and 1997), and as part of the champion 4x800 and 4x400 relays (1997). Sackett set three individual school records (400m, 800m, 1600m) and helped establish new marks in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays, all of which still rank among the program’s top ten performances.
Her senior season was particularly distinguished, as she earned All-State, Academic All-State, and All-Area Dream Team honors while guiding the Comets to their first-ever Eaton County Meet championship and a share of the conference title.
Sackett continued her athletic and academic excellence at Aquinas College (1997–2001), where she became one of the most decorated athletes in school history. Competing in the 400, 600, and 800 meters, as well as the 4x400, 4x800, and distance medley relays, she set multiple school records, several of which still rank among the program’s all-time top five. She helped lead the Saints to four consecutive conference championships (1998–2001) and national prominence.
Sackett made history as the first female track and field athlete in Aquinas history to earn All-American honors in all four years of eligibility. A seven-time All-American, she first earned national recognition with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters at the 1998 NAIA Championships. Her 600-meter indoor record stood for 18 years, underscoring her enduring excellence. She capped her career by earning Academic All-American honors in 2001 and was later inducted into the Aquinas College Hall of Fame in 2021, cementing her legacy as one of the Saints’ all-time greats.
