The winter of 1954 brought a milestone that would be forever remembered in Grand Ledge High School history. Under the steady leadership of Coach Ben Sierra, the Comets boys’ basketball team transformed from contenders into champions, capturing the first regional basketball title in school history (this was also the 1st regional title in GL athletics history, regardless of the sport). It was a season defined by teamwork, determination, and a sense of pride that radiated throughout the entire community.
Led on the court by future Hall of Fame standout Bill Brooks, the Comets combined skill, strategy, and relentless energy to achieve a remarkable 19–3 overall record. From early-season victories over district rivals to hard-fought battles in the regional tournament, the team displayed both poise and fire. Their triumphs included a thrilling 54–47 victory over East Lansing, a decisive 64–48 win against Three Rivers, and a hard-earned 63–57 triumph over Marshall to secure the regional crown.
While their journey ended in the state quarterfinals at the hands of Holland Christian, the significance of the 1954 season was undeniable. The Comets had reached new heights, setting a standard of excellence that would inspire future teams.
The 1954 team was more than a collection of talented players, it was a symbol of what Grand Ledge athletics could achieve. Coach Sierra’s leadership and Bill Brooks’ stellar play embodied the dedication, skill, and spirit that would come to define Comet basketball for generations. That historic regional championship would become the first of many triumphs, laying the foundation for a proud tradition of athletic excellence in Grand Ledge.
