Grand Ledge Athletics Hall of Fame Back to School 5K Fundraiser - Saturday, August 29th at 8:45 AM.
Jerry Jones remains perhaps the most complete athlete in Grand Ledge history. Between 1959 and 1963, he earned twelve varsity letters across football, baseball, track, and basketball, demonstrating a rare combination of skill, versatility, and leadership. His senior year stands as a masterclass in athletic excellence, a season that defined both him and Comet sports.
In football, Jones powered Grand Ledge to its first conference championship since 1941, rushing for more than 600 yards and 12 touchdowns in just six games, despite an injury-shortened season. His performance earned him Class A Honorable Mention All-State honors from the Associated Press. On the baseball diamond, he helped the Comets craft a 19–1 season, capturing both the WCC and Diamond Classic titles while batting over .400, one of the team’s top hitters. On the track, Jones anchored a school-record 880-yard relay team, soared to victory in the long jump at 21-8.5, and led Grand Ledge to its first team championship in track. Even in basketball, he started as a senior and averaged 13 points per game, narrowly missing out on a fourth conference title as the Comets finished second. One athlete, four sports, and nearly four conference championships: his senior year was a testament to versatility, dedication, and excellence.
From Grand Ledge, Jones carried his talents to Michigan State University, joining the Spartan football dynasty of the mid-1960s under Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty. A three-year letterwinner, he helped secure back-to-back national championships in 1965 and 1966, Big Ten titles, and a Rose Bowl appearance in 1965. In 1966, he received the Biggie Munn Award for leadership and perseverance, recognizing his impact both on and off the field. That same year, Jones recorded 41 tackles, 20 solo tackles, and two interceptions, including a 32-yard pick-six, during his senior campaign. Decades later, the 1965 and 1966 Spartan teams, of which he was a key member, were immortalized as the first teams inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.
