Carl Chapman’s name is etched into the history of Grand Ledge athletics as both a trailblazer and mentor whose influence stretched far beyond the stopwatch and starting line. A visionary coach, Chapman led the boys’ cross country program in the early 1970s, guiding the Comets to Regional Championships in 1972 and 1974, and Conference Championships in 1972, 1974, and 1975. He also led the girls' program to Conference Championships in 1974, 1975, 1987 & 1988. His teams competed with grit and consistency, helping establish Grand Ledge as a force in distance running.
Chapman’s most enduring legacy, however, may be his role in pioneering opportunities for young women in athletics. In 1973, he launched the first girls’ cross country program at Grand Ledge, a bold move at a time when girls’ sports were only beginning to gain recognition. His 1975 team quickly made history by capturing a conference championship, winning five invitational titles, posting a 9–1 dual meet record, and, most notably, claiming the unofficial state championship before girls’ cross country was officially sanctioned by the MHSAA. Their triumph symbolized both athletic excellence and progress in women’s sports, paving the way for generations to come. Comet coaching legend Carl Chapman founded the Women’s program at Grand Ledge in 1973, and 50 years ago, in 1975, Coach Chapman, assisted by Hall of Fame Men’s Coach Jim Brandt, hosted a Women’s Cross Cross State Championship meet right here in Grand Ledge at the famed Ledge Meadows Golf Course (now the site of the premier Greater Lansing Invitational!). They invited every school in the state, and about 75 girls competed that day!
The meet hosts even remember a Mom at the meet remarking, “Should girls run that far?” These girls were real pioneers and trailblazers! Three years later, in 1979, the MHSAA would host the first official Women’s Cross Country State Championship, but this team did it first and paved the way for thousands of girls across the state, right here in Grand Ledge, Michigan.
Beyond championships, Chapman’s impact is best reflected in the athletes he mentored. Among them is Kim Spalsbury, who went on to become a highly successful track and field coach at Grand Ledge and DeWitt High Schools. Spalsbury credited Chapman for “modeling good coaching and mentoring over the years,” a statement that speaks volumes about his character, leadership, and the example he set.
Coach Carl Chapman’s career stands as a testament to competitive success, pioneering spirit, and enduring mentorship. His contributions to cross country and track at Grand Ledge continue to inspire athletes, coaches, and the community decades later.
