Scott Kemp personified the multidimensional athlete, excelling in both baseball and football while leaving a lasting legacy at Grand Ledge High School and beyond. At Grand Ledge (1974–1978), Kemp was a central figure in the Class A State Championship baseball team of 1977, helping the Comets claim CAC and District Championships in 1978. He was named to the LSJ Dream Team in 1977 and 1978, earned Team MVP honors both seasons, and received Class A First Team All-State recognition in 1977 and 1978. As a junior in 1977, he hit an outstanding .452 with 26 RBIs and 48 hits, while his senior year performance included a .400 batting average with three home runs, 23 RBIs, and 36 hits. Kemp also excelled on the gridiron, earning All-CAC Honorable Mention as a linebacker during his senior season.

Following his remarkable high school career, Kemp continued his athletic excellence at Eastern Michigan University (1978–1982). Over seasons, he became a cornerstone of the program, helping lead EMU to MAC Regular Season Champions in 1982, MAC Tournament Champions in 1981 and 1982, and two NCAA Regional appearances in 1981 and 1982. Kemp earned Team MVP honors in 1982, was named 1st Team All-Conference, and captured MAC Player of the Year while also claiming the Conference Batting Championship in the same year. During his senior season, he led the MAC Conference in hits, RBIs, batting average, and doubles, setting multiple school and conference records. He finished 2nd in school history in single-season hits (record held until 2004), 3rd in single-season doubles (held until 1997), 4th in single-season RBIs (held until 1986), and 5th in both career and single-season batting average (held until 1996 and 1988, respectively).

Kemp’s athletic achievements and leadership have been recognized beyond his playing days. In 2015, he was inducted into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame, and the Grand ledge High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025 celebrating a career that exemplifies the enduring impact of Grand Ledge Comets in collegiate and professional sports.
