Grand Ledge High School 1961-1965
Track: 4 Varsity Letters. State Wide Dream Team: 1964. Undefeated in the WCC in the 100 yard dash & 220 yard dash (won them both 4 years in a row at the conference meet). Also ran on the winning 880 yard relay team. Helped team win 2 conference titles in 1963 & 1964. Set league meet records in the 100 yard dash (10.0) & the 220 yard dash (22.2). Held the school record in the 100 yard dash (9.9) for 42 years (broken in 2006 by James Jackson, modern race 100m dash is longer than 100 yard dash). Still holds the school record for the 220 yard dash (modern 200m race is almost 1.5 yards shorter than the older 200 yard dash). His record of 21.6 was tied by James Jackson in 2006 & is the oldest standing school track record (men & women) by nearly 20 years. Finished 2nd at Regionals in the 100 yard dash & 2nd in the 220 to qualify for states in 1964. Finished 5th in the 100 yard dash at the 1964 Class A State Track meet.
Football: 4 Varsity Letters & 3-year starter at Running Back. Scored 40 TDs (school career record for 33 years, broken in 1997 by Matt O’Connor), including 19 rushing TDs as a senior in 1964, which led the Greater Lansing Area in 1964 (also was a school single-season record for 28 years, broken in 1992 by Rick Hollern). Member of back-to-back conference title teams in 1962 & 1963 (1962 title was the first title in 21 years & only 3rd in school history at that time). Named All-State & a High School All-American in Football in 1964 by 3 different outlets: Coach & Athlete, Smith and Street, & Life magazines.
