Matt Greene’s hockey journey began in his hometown of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where he graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 2001. From a young age, Greene displayed exceptional talent, competing in the 1997 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, an early showcase of his skills on the international stage. His development continued as he earned a spot in the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) from 2000 to 2001, representing the United States at the World Under-18 Championship Tournament. Following this, he played for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL (2001–2002), earning USHL Second All-Star Team honors.
Greene was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round, 44th overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, but chose to pursue collegiate hockey at the University of North Dakota. From 2002 to 2005, he played for the Fighting Sioux, gaining recognition for his physical play, skill, and leadership. In his final season, 2004–2005, Greene served as team captain and led UND to the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship game, finishing as runners-up. He also earned All-District Academic honors in 2004 and 2005, demonstrating his commitment to excellence both on the ice and in the classroom. During this time, Greene represented the United States internationally at the World Junior Championships in 2002 and 2003. Career stats at UND: 120 GP, 3 goals, 28 assists (as a defenseman).
Greene’s professional career began in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers (2005–2008), helping the team reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2006. In 2008, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, where he became a cornerstone of the franchise. Serving as alternate captain from 2008–2016, Greene played a critical role in the Kings’ success, helping the team capture two Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014, including scoring the final goal of the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals in Game 6. He also earned multiple Ace Bailey Memorial Awards for being the most inspirational player (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017) and represented the United States in the World Championship Tournaments in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Following his retirement in 2017, Greene transitioned to a role in scouting and player development for the Los Angeles Kings, continuing to contribute to the sport beyond his playing career. In recognition of his achievements, Greene was inducted into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Grand Ledge High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025, cementing his legacy as one of the most accomplished athletes to emerge from Grand Ledge.
