The year 1962 marked a defining chapter in Grand Ledge High School athletics, a time when a young wrestling program, only in its third year, rose to statewide prominence under the masterful guidance of Head Coach Charles Gorman and Assistant Coach Harry Byam.
The 1962 Comets stormed through their season with unmatched determination, finishing with a perfect 16–0 dual meet record. They overwhelmed their opponents by a combined score of 665–97, a margin that reflected their discipline, conditioning, and relentless competitive spirit. At the league meet, Grand Ledge shattered records by scoring 139 team points and crowning 9 individual conference champions, an impressive feat.
The team’s roster was both deep and talented, featuring athletes who helped lay the foundation for decades of wrestling success. Representing Grand Ledge with pride were Don Marks, Marc Cory, Dave Mowery, Don Endres, Dale Shipman, Dan Cline, Chuck Thompson, Tom Spitzley, Robert Dingler, Robert McCausey, Tim O’Brien, Doug Eschtruth, Bill Graham, Daniel Maxwell, Wesley Edington, Mike Green, Roger Warner, Lee Mattson, Randy Brace, Linn Driver, Mark Hughes, Richard Koone, John Schneeberger, Dennis Henretty, Jim Twitchell, Ronald Simons, Jim Lowell, Joe Cody, William Waterman, Tom Lear, Larry Spitzley, Dave Kebler, Jerry Avery, Randy Kirby, Kim Horrocks, William Trachsel, James Therrian, and Roland Fletcher.
Within this outstanding group, several individuals distinguished themselves on the state’s biggest stage. Three Comets captured individual state championships: Bill Waterman (154 lbs), William Trachsel (95 lbs), and Doug Eschtruth (Heavyweight). Two others — Joe Cody (165 lbs) and Larry Spitzley (103 lbs) — earned state runner-up honors. Their collective excellence also produced four regional champions — Waterman, Trachsel, Eschtruth, and Spitzley — whose success propelled the team to the Regional Championship and into contention for the State Title.
The season reached its dramatic conclusion in a hard-fought state finals showdown with Grandville, where the Comets fell just short in an 84–77 battle. Though the ultimate championship eluded them, their performance was nothing short of remarkable. Every wrestler on the roster contributed to the program’s rise, pushing one another to greater heights and setting a standard of excellence that would define Grand Ledge wrestling for generations to come.
Their historic season was formally recognized with induction into the Grand Ledge High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025. The legacy of the 1962 Grand Ledge Wrestling Team is not only measured in victories, titles, or individual accolades, but in the culture of commitment and pride they established. Under Coach Gorman’s leadership, these young men transformed potential into performance and built a foundation that proved Grand Ledge wrestling could stand among the very best in Michigan.
