The 1975 Grand Ledge girls’ cross country team carved a path where none yet existed. Coached by visionary Carl Chapman, they competed before girls’ cross country was officially recognized by the MHSAA, yet they proved their dominance by winning what was considered the first unofficial state championship.
The Comets thrived despite running alongside the boys’ team, finishing the season with a 9–1 dual meet record, 5 invitational titles, and a conference championship. Their crowning achievement came at the state meet, where Teresa Lawless (2nd), Peg Dyer (5th), Angela Illief (11th), and Linda Moreno (15th) led the charge to victory.
More than just a championship, their season symbolized perseverance, courage, and the promise of opportunity for future generations of female athletes. Their historic season was formally recognized with induction into the Grand Ledge High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025.
